Netdesign.nl develops NetTailor.
At Netdesign.nl, everything revolves around conceiving and developing attractive and effective new media solutions. One of the latest solutions Netdesign.nl has come up with is NetTailor, an online tailoring tool.
NetTailor’s aim is to help users walk through a program built for flexible, attractive and analytic use, all the while monitoring and storing each of the steps the user takes. Unknown to the users, the choices they make determine which program components they get to see next – a program tailored to the user, hence the name NetTailor.
A combination of Flash 6+, server-side scripting (PHP) and a relational database (my SQL) offers visitors endless items. An ‘item’ can be a question, a screenshot or a short film, or simply an image. The user’s input is saved in a database after each item. Because NetTailor saves each user’s responses in a database, it can ask questions or provide information tailored to fit each individual participant exclusively. This means that different target groups are offered different versions of an instruction, a question or a solution at one and the same time. Based on previous replies, the system decides which version or versions of an instruction, question or solution the user is shown next.

The user’s every answer, response, or a mouse click can be stored as a variable in the final statistics file. This tells us when users start or finish a program and also how long they need for each item and what responses they give.
All variable definitions can be downloaded from the Admin Center and imported to SPSS, a leading statistics analysis tool. Likewise, all user answers can be downloaded in a format that can be input directly via SPSS (see also www.spss.com)
NetTailor can be used for a variety of applications:
1. E-learning
2. Tailored interventions
3. Online presentations
4. Online surveys & online academic research
5. Serious games
